This week, in addition to trying the Rift beta, I also tried out Champions Online. Beginning yesterday they went to a free2play model. I haven't had a chance to try it following the changes that came with that, but I did try the trial level just before.
I'm not really into Super Heroes or Comic Books, so I don't think I'm quite the target audience, but I thought it was fun and might be an okay diversion from time-to-time.
The trial only had the tutorial zone which took me an hour and a half to go through. In terms of gameplay it is an MMO. You click quest givers and kill and collect things. It didn't come across as grindy and I never had to camp one mob-type for drops for very long. Usually there were several quests running at once in an overlapping area, so there were a few things to work on.
You start with two powers and in the tutorial zone that's all you get. One power is your constant-use power which builds energy, one is a nuke. The nice thing about the nuke is that it charges, so you can tailor your nuking to the target. But it would have been nice to get a little more going on.
The absolute best and most fun thing in the game was making the character. Not the stats and powers part, but the look. There area ton of options on what your character looks like in body shape, and the costume designer is just a total blast: whether you want a standard tights-wearing superhero, or a biker-tough anti-hero, or a zombie-snake.
With the new F2P option, is anyone else giving it a try? _________________ [Image blocked due to inappropriate content]
