D & D Online is still around, and it was fun to play and followed alot of the rules of D&D 3, but it was lacking something... a DM/GM on the other side controlling the monsters and laughing maniacally while the parties Rogue gets critted and falls to the ground. Well, soon we might have that through D & D Insider's upcoming "D&D Game Table". Watch the videos. Granted it's not "WoW" quality graphics and interaction, but it's Paper D&D put in a Virtual world. Being able to play with friends remotely and/or even in the same room with PC/laptop's is coming, and some of us are interested in checking it out. Notice the light source moves with the player and only reveals what he's able to see. You can also easily show people (as DM) other visual adds. Characters are saved on their server and DM's can access hundreds/thousands of virtual monters. Granted, this is Not a Game, but a Visual Aid and Tool. It won't replace D&D house parties or sanctioned events, but it will allow friends that are no longer a short drive from each other, to play and socialize.

Just thought some of ya'll might wanna see it.

Cannot wait for this. There is something so much better about sitting down with friends and playing good old D&D. This is an awesome enabler, for people who happen to be geologically disadvantaged to still be able to play with their friends.

Playing an RPG with a real GM is so much different that playing a computer game. For one thing, the enemies can be intelligent. You could have a conversation with them (think bildo baggins and smaug from the hobbit).

A GOOD rpg session has a lot going on. Usually all of the players have side things going on that may/may not effect the current gaming session. So you have everybody who's playing driving the story.

For example, at one time my party rescued a human "ranger" in a dungeon. Story sounded good, guy got ambushed by some ogres, and they had put him in the "larder" until they were ready to deal with him. Turns out the "ranger" was actually an assasin sent to kill the leader of our group. Through our actions, we caused the GM (who was playing the assasin) to roll to see if the assasin would change his mind. It did happen, and we ended up with a loyal NPC out of what should have been a fight.

Of course, this caused the entire party to have an ongoing conflict with the assasins guild, which caused all matter of amusing encounters later in the game.

Agreed. Although I've never played D&D, I have played text-based RPG's online, and its a blast! WoW is not really an RPG, since you aren't role playing. You CAN do it, but outside of a few people, no one does it. I think its difficult to role play in a game like WoW, because the adventures and quests are not tailored to your party, but to a generic group. So if your character is an assassin, for example, you probably won't group up with a Paladin to go kill a boss in Kara, unless you are planning to kill that Paladin, and in WoW you can't do that. There are a lot of limitations in WoW that prevent role playing. But text based and D&D are the true sense of RPG.

I actually miss role playing a lot. It lets you use your creative side, your story telling side, even if you aren't the GM. You become your character, or they become you as it were, and that is what true role playing is.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE WoW, but for an RPG fan, these types of games do not work well.
